I’m thrilled to share a recent milestone from my journey with The Soaring Center. During my recent trip to Jakarta, Indonesia, I had the honor of meeting with Rachel Luschen, the Executive Director of Unbound Now Indonesia. Our discussion was a powerful reflection of the incredible work Unbound Now Indonesia is doing to combat human trafficking and support survivors.
Unbound Now Indonesia: Leading the Charge
Since its launch in 2019, Unbound Now Indonesia has emerged as a formidable force in the fight against human trafficking. With dedicated offices in Jakarta and Lampung, their mission is clear: to liberate the 1.8 million Indonesians currently trapped in this horrific crime. Their approach is both comprehensive and deeply local, making significant strides in rescuing victims and preventing future exploitation.
Unbound Now Indonesia’s efforts are truly impressive. They are on the front lines, training law enforcement, medical professionals, families, and students across the country. This tailored approach ensures that their programs address the specific challenges faced in Indonesia, from recognizing trafficking indicators to maintaining online safety. Their work is not just about meeting immediate needs but about creating lasting change.
The Reality of Trafficking in Indonesia
The trafficking situation in Indonesia is stark and sobering. Victims are exploited both within the country and abroad, with every one of Indonesia’s 38 provinces being involved in trafficking networks. Traffickers use ruthless methods such as retaining identity documents, enforcing debt bondage, and using threats of violence to control their victims.
The commercial sex industry is particularly alarming, with up to 30 percent of individuals in this sector being victims of sex trafficking. Traffickers deceive and coerce women and girls into exploitation through false promises of employment or debt manipulation, primarily in areas like Batam and Jakarta.

What stands out about Unbound Now Indonesia is their commitment to not only immediate interventions but also long-term solutions. Their mission is to empower local communities and build a network of local leadership to sustain their fight against trafficking. By adapting proven programs to the specific needs of Indonesia, they are making a profound impact.
